It sounds like you have the skills you need, you're just not being given a shot. Given that you've built B2C mobile and web apps, I wonder if some of it is how you're positioning yourself. The hardest part of building a new product in my mind is getting V1 out the door. Personally, I don't care who your customer was, I care about your process, about how you ask questions, about what questions you ask, and about how successful your product ultimately is.
Totally agree with the point about positioning, but I don't want to misrepresent my experience (nor should I have to IMO). Yeah, I have come to the conclusion that I may have to launch a B2C product on my own at this point just to have that in my portfolio...which is seems like an extreme solution. I've pitched to a range of companies, from fortune 500 to a couple smaller startups. I would think it was me, if the response wasn't so uniform: "we're really looking for someone that's managed a consumer-facing product." It makes me wonder if when describing my process, I'm simply missing something specific to consumer applications.
