Went to Croatia for the third time as an Austrian and don't think I can go back

  1. It's funny cause most of the austrian tourists say from 18-30 years old I've met in croatia are some of the rudest and dirtiest people. Total disrespect for our country and probably any other country they visit. The half eaten donut is probably from one of your compatriots.

  2. Pazi situaciju danas...

  3. Sunken boats are all, as I can see, made of wood, people sunk their boats once everywhile so the wooden cabin and hull (normally above waterline) can soak up the water so the wood can regain moisture and the boat doesn't dry up.

  5. I'm in Croatia right now and have experienced the exact opposite. Friendly staff, clean streets, locals are nice and scenery is good. Now granted I am In a tourist area bit I have be outside of that into the locals bits and have seen clean streets and nice people

  6. Yes, this Austrian is insane. I visited as an American tourist and people were super nice to me. People wanted to chat, I got good service and great food.

Odgrizeni donati u SVAKOM lidlu, ono bas svakom? Crknutne ptice i macke danima? Potopljeni brodovi?

  9. You just can't please everyone. As someone who has been visiting Croatia for the last two months, my experience has been completely the opposite.

  10. As a tourist, sounds like good riddance, if you’ve been here 3 times and all you do is complain instead of trying to explore new areas or such

  11. A couple days ago I drove from Germany to Croatia for my Vacation and you go mostly trough Austria on that route.

  12. can confirm. Graz roads are terrible. gas stations in austria are filthy by default. waiters do come to check up on us but from what I gathered we didnt get any special treatment by being a tourist. guests were served as they came. this last part happened in Bad Radkersburg and Leibnitz.

  16. So this post is just OP taking every negative experience they've had visiting Croatia and generalizing from it and their own confirmation bias.

  17. You are right about damaged infrastructure, buildings, bad sidewalks, parking lots, and cigarette buds...But the things like eaten donut in store is just random observation that can happen literally everywhere if some drunk guy comes in before you, or the waiter experience depends on which places you go. This post has some valid points but others are just your bad intentions. Our country had a very different history from yours, and you have to respect and understand that.

Takvima nikad ugodit a niti moramo.

  20. I believed everything you said excerpt “locals were served before you”. Sorry but that must be some other universe. Locals are treated like dirt because we don’t have EUROs to spend in their fancy ass establishments.

  21. I'm in Croatia on holiday at the moment and you're really not wrong about the fag ends being all over the floor at the beach. Some of the service is dreadful but no more than in other places, sometimes it's been lovely. Swings and roundabouts really

Cringe

  28. Well, I ll give you a different perspective. We dont like you because you act like assholes that own the place most of the time. I am sure you are a normal polite person, but I ll tell you an anecdote from 2 hours ago. German plates.on the car, parks in the middle of my street and starts cleaning the car. No awareness what so ever that we actually live here and need to go to work, be somewhere on time. Hes just standing there, all doors open, i cant get passed him and hes smiling at me like chill bro. We fucking hate you cause you make our lives miserable for 2-3 months. We don't have "tourist" villages, we have living cities that you make unbearable to live in. You are also pricing us out of our own lives in every way imaginable. So to put it plainly, we hate your guts and you are just, what out country made, necessary crap we have to deal with. There, i am really sorry if this comes out too rude or hostile, but its no gloves response to your comment. I have nothing against you personally, but you make my life miserable for 2 months of the year.

  29. A dobro sad i ti pretjeruješ u drugu stranu.

  31. this post has to be a troll, and I cant believe its being taken seriously. Some parts are valid, but most of the "points" are overexaggerated to the point of them being comical. You seem to have smoked too much of that good shit and somehow found yourself in a fallout game.

  33. Not from croatia or croatian, I am Serbian but I haven't had that experience whenever I travelled from Canada back home in the Balkans. Yes, it is definitely different from what we are used to, a little less order in place but I haven't seen many things mentioned above. Everyone was so friendly and being Serbian I expected I'd be treated not so good but everyone was so nice and welcoming and I spoke English actually too, because my Serbian/Croatian has an accent. The stores are clean, busy during the rush hour but nothing like that. In fact, at some stores In Croatia, unlike in Canada, you guys weigh fruits and put a sticker before you go to pay for it. So I was confused and a number of locals approached to help me. The only thing that did bother me was stray dogs but that's everywhere south of Slovenia I think. Croatia appears to me also very clean, yea there are dirty areas not well kept, but we have that in Canada too. Ive also been to Vienna a number of times and Ive found Austrians to be actually really rude to me. They push you on the subway and don't even apologize, everyone cuts you off when you walk without turning around. In Croatia, I didn't get that at all. It must be just your luck (probably as well as mine in austria), but Croatia is a beautiful country, with nice people and really no prejudice. Also speaking about your experience at a grocery store, we have that in Canada too, Esp during covid when we had to all line up to pay for stuff. Given how poor Croatia is in comparison to austria, they are doing really well and they are trying so hard to make you feel like you're home. You need to understand their circumstances - underpaid employees everywhere, little support from the gov't. If it really bothers you, you can always go to another country for vacation. For the record, unsure if you went to Cuba before, but you need to see what Cuba is like before judging Croatia. Cheers. Sorry about the long message guys.

  34. I'm an American mutt that has been to Croatia and also loved it and was treated really well. Austrians are not known as friendly people. Inflexible, rude and cold.

  35. I have many friends from the north of Slovenia. The part where theres a border with Austria. And now i understand them why they always talk about Austrians very badly.

  36. What's up with all these three months old (or a month old) accounts coming here and writing posts and comments like these? Lol

  38. We have wastly different mentality than Austrians. We seek short term income without wanting to do any investment. We are basically blessed geographically, and we will milk that to the last moment until the entire system collapses.

  39. Croatians haven't invented short-term profit prioritisation, ffs. If you think there's nothing like that outside of Croatia you need to travel more. Literally every place is the same, what "mentality"? People are greedy everywhere.

  40. Beauty is in the eye of beholder. So is the ugliness. If you opted to focus on bad things, and by the photos in that album shows that's just what you did, that's what you get. Being tourist is sad thing. People go on vacation to sunbath, swim, dine and rest all day. Maybe a short walk in the city if there's anything to see. People don't go on vacation to review and comment on state of old buildings, quality of roads and infrastructure, state of old marine vessels.

  41. I was in split and was amazing. However, if you want everything like in Austria, stay in Austria. When you visit a country you have to understand the locals with the good and the bad.

  42. huh, for a long time I haven't read something so pretentious. it staggering how much ethnic and cultural superiority in just one post.

  43. I visit Croatia 25 years and NEVER had any of these experiences! As an Austrian I want to apologise for the expression of this wealth neglected person. If you don’t like it stay home

  44. My experience as I was working from 14yo-25yo at my parents who are working in one of biggest tourism towns in Istra, and they still offer their services on the beach altough I found myself other job. I would have then probably 1000 guests per day so I can give you some info.

  45. No need to apologize. As stated in my first post many times, I'm not here to judge I was just wondering. I had hoped for like 5 comments stating why I'm wrong or why I'm right not like 300.

  47. This is the guy that pays these waiters in Austria and he knows very well how lowly he does pay them.:)

  48. Suuuuure. Croatia being understaffed during season and littered by tourists is our fault. We literally get anyone we can, students, pensioners, anyone from neighboring countries (who will basically work for peanuts) and we're still understaffed.

  49. I'm on holiday in dubrovnik (lapad to be more precise) right now and I'm having a lovely time. To me it's the complete opposite of what you're describing.

A smeće bacaju i turisti.

  51. Why are so many tourists just so spoiled? You all are extremely privileged to even have the money and time to go to another country for a holiday. In most of rural Croatia the few days a year you do get off are for going to your forest to get firewood or picking potatoes or harvest season, why cant you do something similar if going to another country was so awful. If you want perfect service then why did you come to a poor country with struggling people who can barely afford new wheels for their Astra and why did you come three times?

  52. at least we don't beat the shit out of people masked with wooden sticks yelling randomly on the street in winter because tradition, yes that happened to me in the civilized alps, carneval or christmas time not sure anymore

  53. You mean Krampus? It's hundreds of years of tradition and spanning the alpine regions from switzerland, liechtenstein, italy, austria and bavaria of germany.

  56. I mean there's enough wrong with the country but this guy is also just a bit whiny. Croatia isn't even close to being as rich as Austria is. Of course many things will be worse. Many things are done half-assed because of corruption. There are many assholes because people don't necessarily love tourists but they rely on them for the economy. On top of that, everyone aged 40+ years literally went through a goddamn war not too long ago. Of course some of these people will have bad tempers and rude behavior.

  57. The picture you shown with the broken fasade are bullets, rockets that hit it, shot from our dear Serbians that attacked and harmed Croatians economy extremely and still havent paid a cent of raparations, not even considering their Ausbeute of Croatian industry for 50 years.

  58. Wrong place, wrong time. Try Korcula. And btw, croatia’s beaches are one of the cleanest in the world. But ok. Maybe focus on the beauty instead of just looking for cigarette butts.

  59. The only time I saw half-bitten donuts in a supermarket was during Ultra in Split when (mostly) drunk British tourists would literally piss outside the store and make a mess everywhere because of their colonial mentality.

  60. You are bothered by literally everything and btw the cigarettes on the beaches are from tourists, I know from my own experience

  61. You know the saying "good times create weak men, weak men create hard times, hard times create strong men, strong men create good times"?

  62. That’s what happens when a country is filled with corruption, underpaid and overworked workforce that can’t even afford a place to live, and as of recently can’t even afford to spend summers on their own coast because of tourism.

  63. Frend, you want to come for vacation to a cheaper country but expect the same level of service and enviroment care as in Austria. Sorry but you are in the wrong. Btw why are you venting on reddit about it? You could have simple chose a different destination, nobody would blame you, its your money after all. But with this post you are making yourself look kind of silly.

  64. I don't see the point of your post. If you don't like the country don't visit, why post on reddit like you're going to change anything. Also next time I'll go to Austria I expect evevrything to be clean and beautiful, smelling like roses and people smiling and extra kind, not like last time I was in Vienna trying avoid horse shit from the streets

  65. You have to call the waiter / wave to them if you want to order something else. They think that they will annoy you by coming to your table uninvited.

  66. Ok, sorry, but aint no way you were just casually strollin through the cities/streets and on accident saw so many bad sights and had so many bad experiances. If everyone had such experiances, there wouldn't be so many tourists, right? Idk man, somethin aint adding up

  67. You just have to relax a bit: beauty is in the eyes of observer. Its not a vacation if you count cigarette buds and holes on road.

  68. Wow those are some mean comments you got there. My experience with croatia has been different, sure sometimes people are rude but not really more rude than in my home country. For the most part it has been very enjoyable here. But if you don't like it in croatia there are plenty of other places to go and there is no shame in it.

  69. Bro if you had that shitty of an experience the 1st 2 times, why go for a 3rd? We have a saying here that goes something like this: even a donkey will know for the 3rd time.

  70. I am from Croatia and I have experienced some of these things as well, although I have to say some of these are usually brought upon by other tourists, esp. grocery store mayhem.

  71. Now you know how hard is for us to live here ! When we come to work in Austria over the winter you give us minimal wage so we don't have choice than go back to Croatia.

  72. That is Croatia. Man if you dont like it, just go wherever you think its better. Fuckin tourists think they are a factor which should be considered when organizing way of life. Audacity. You dont see me coming to Austria and bitch about your fckn traffic camera to Austrians, i say only to my friends those idiots live like in North Korea, if you drive 2km/h above you get ticket

  73. I think you jumped to a conclusion that the OP thinks something should change because or for the tourists. He made an observation, and frankly, he was not wrong. I can hear some frustration, which I in my opinion is normal, after you have invested your time and money and hopes for a good and pleasant holiday and what he got was… well, Croatia. And it is not the Croatia we deserve either.

  74. Welcome to the poor, post-socialist side of Europe! Our infrastructure sucks and we're messy and disorganised cause our living standard sucks even more.

  75. I live in Austria and I find it way more beautiful in Croatia! The people are normal in head!! Exactly for that reason I can’t wait to visit Croatia each year. To go on distance to people like that. Some media influenced Austrian people who are so sick minded that they wast so much time for so a long post on Reddit can be avoided by visiting Croatia😂 but please.. a lot of Austrians are normal good people not like that guy

  76. Foreigner goes from a very developed country to a much less developed country and wonders why things are crumbling and the people are miserable. Idk what to tell you man, try Italy or Greece next time

  77. Ovo ljeto u Zadru u restoranu oba konobara bezobrazna. Prošlo ljeto konobar u okolici Zadra bezobrazan.

  79. I have to say I’m sorry if you didn’t like it but you seem like a person who blames the world for not being up to their standards. Maybe it’s you who shouldn’t go there. Go somewhere else if you don’t like it or better yet stay home and don’t go anywhere.

  80. Very well written. I feel the same every day looking at the neglect and carelessness of my compatriots. I'm ashamed of everything you said, but most people seem not to notice or care.

  82. I can agree on this. Streets are shit, locals think they own the town/village. Recently read reviews of croatian apartment/concession owners complaining on how the tourists don’t tip as much as they used to, they bring there own food, drinks, chairs and umbrellas to the beach. Which totally makes sense because they raked up the prices. Being born here it is a shame on how locals especially can disgrace the land and soil they fought to protect to just make a mess of it with cigarette butts. I think it’s a good idea that outsiders can now purchase property here and inject some money to really clean up Croatia. I think it can be the new Monaco especially along the cost.

  83. Locala would rather beat you up than trash their own beaches. The last thing we need is a hotspot for rich douches, already to many beaches are privatized

  84. This is 100% true that locals treat foreigners like trash. I have a good story about this. I was visiting Croatia with my wife and on an island and my wife was thirsty and wanted a coke for her headache. I gave her 10 kuna (2008) and she came back telling me she didn’t have enough and that the person at the bar was asking for 50 mins. Odd I thought and went with her. I asked (in English) for a coke and again person at bar replied back in English saying it was 50 kuna. I asked him are you sure? And he said yes. I then started speaking Croatian (am fluent) and he changed his tune immediately and apologized saying he was confused. Other times similar issues happened. But can attest to waiters sitting and drinking smoking and ignoring foreigners as well.

  85. The good old days of Austro-Hungarian Empire are unfortunately long gone. Ah, the nostalgia for living in the civilized country.
